Essential Information About LED Television Technology

It was not too long ago that we were arguing the case for and against LCD and plasma televisions. And though LCD TV eventually came out the victor, due to its superior all round function and practicality, its crown is now under threat. That this threat comes from its sibling the LED television, is all the more intriguing.

It is not at all surprising that this change is driven by the major players in the electronics, and most certainly monitor and TV screen industry. However, a quick look at the new technology demonstrates that they are certainly a step forward; rather than simply be a way to get the consumer to part with more cash.

In essence, an LED television is just the same as the LCD that is probably sitting in your lounge right now. The difference is regards how the light emitting diodes, (LED), send the light to the screen. This is of course very complex, but in layman terms relies on backlit or sidelit, (edge), technology.

Having the lights set up in this way allows for greater control of the picture; lights can be dimmed and brightened independently of their neighbours; creating a richer content and feel and most important of all, creating true image black scale; they key to picture quality.

This is all fantastic of course, but what are the downsides to LED television technology? Increased power? Short Lifespan? Surprisingly, the opposite of each of these is true. The technology use less energy and, just as importantly uses this energy well with minimal wastage, which in itself drives up how long the TV itself will last for. Indeed, estimates suggest they could go on indefinitely if looked after well.

They are also a great deal thinner than there predecessors. Whilst regular LCD TVs are very slim; at just mere inches, an LED television will be measured with a depth given in millimetres. Indeed, the leading manufacturers are producing units that are a mere 6mm in depth.

Okay, this all sounds excellent but of course, it isn’t all good news. Whilst no limitations exist to the operation of an LED television, there is a limitation regards affordability. It is really no different to the large prices that LCD and most particularly plasmas were tagged with though.

The benefits then are quite significant with this new technology; better pictures, better lighting; better control, and all whilst having a positive impact on the environment. Indeed, the only downside remains the price.

But these prices will fall as demand picks up and we really recognize the benefits of LED television technology, (and as newer technologies come on line of course!)

While the colours of LCD are not quite as vibrant as Plasma LCD TV has a higher refresh rate and longer lifespan. This makes it ideal for people who have a games console attached to their Full HD TV. Due to current advances LCD HD TV is generally slightly cheaper, making it a great option for anyone on a budget!

For people who receive HD TV signals or want clearer quality from their existing reception a HD TV converter can be a great option, you can buy HD TV converters that work in two directions, the first can convert an old analogue signal and increase it’s quality, this is not always reliable but can help improve your HD TV Viewing without buying an expensive Full HD TV package. You can also buy HD TV converters that change a HD Signal to an analogue output for older TVs, this is actually reducing the image quality, and therefore your viewing.

As mentioned in the first paragraph, not all TVs advertised as HD are actually HD. If you are looking for a true Full HD TV then you will have to look carefully at the specifications. Be careful for TVs which have the 720p standard, this is often sold as HD Ready, and while it provides higher viewing quality, it is not True HD. 720p is designed more for Laptops and PCs and is more than suitable for the screen sizes associated with these. For Large HD TVs though you will notice the difference.

When you are buying your Full HD TV you should be looking for the 1080i or 1080p standards. 1080i gives a native resolution of 1280-1080 which is full HD standard. 1080p gives a resolution of 1920-1080 for a much sharper, clearer image. The choice you make often comes down to price. 1080p is much more expensive, and can sometimes be out of the price range of those on a budget. Fortunately 1080i gives a great quality image, and is generally more than enough for anyone!

All in all buying a Full HD TV is not quite as hard as it first appears. If you are looking for the best TV quality, the best gaming performance, or simply a better quality viewing experience that won’t break the bank, your options are pretty clear. OLED and 3D televisions are something you may be starting to become aware of. Neither can be realistically considered as option when purchasing a new television as there are only limited options out there. They are however sure to be making a big impact in the future.

LED Monitors Are The Bright Choice

By now, almost everyone has made the switch to LCD monitors. While these monitors are much less bulky than the older CRT monitors, there are some disadvantages that can be solved by making another switch to the LED monitors.

The difference between an LCD monitor and an LED monitor is with the source of the back light. The older LCD monitors are back lit with florescent tubes. These tubes only have a lifetime of three to four years before they begin to dim. Although it may seem that the smart thing to do to correct this problem would have been to allow the consumer to change the florescent tubes and keep the same monitor, but this option has not been offered by manufacturers. Instead, users are left with no alternative other than to replace their monitors. Thus, monitors become a large source of electronic waste.

In addition, although lighter than the monitors they replaced, LCD monitors are still heavier and thicker than LED monitors. Part of the thickness is due to the size of the florescent tubes. In contrast, LED monitors are very thin, especially if they are the edge lit type of monitor. It is the introduction of these monitors that make the ultra thin notebooks of today possible.

A third disadvantage of the LCD monitors is that the florescent light does not produce a full color spectrum. There are some colors that are just not as bright with these monitors as they are with the LED monitors that produce a high quality white light.

In addition, you will save energy with these newer monitors. While the amount may seem insignificant for a desk top computer, for a notebook or laptop computer less energy consumption means longer battery life.

Some users do complain that the edge lit LED monitors do not have an evenly lit screen. They find it brighter along the edges and darker in the center. This is due to the fact that the LED lights are only along the edges, making the super thin screen possible. This may simply be a matter of adjusting to the use of the screen.

Another complaint the some people have with LED monitors is that they are too bright for some applications. A suggestion might be to find a LED monitor that allows the user to adjust the brightness. Users who make this complaint find that the bright monitor causes eyestrain.

Even though there are complaints, the LED monitor is one of the best available monitors on the market today. They are super thin, have great clarity and last longer than the LCD monitors that they are replacing.

By choosing a monitor with a long life, you make a choice for the environment. This choice will mean that you do not have to replace the monitor every time you replace your computer.
