What to Look for in a Data Centre

A data centre is a facility where computer systems and their associated components are physically housed. Data centres include a backup power supply, redundant data communications connections, environmental (climate, etc.) controls, and security devices. Any business that relies upon a computer network and web-based applications can reasonably expect to require the use of a data centre. Some companies build their own data centres on their premises. Many other companies, (especially those with complex business functions that rely heavily on technology) elect to outsource their infrastructure and web hosting to a service that includes use of the vendors data centre. The latter has several different benefits, including:

The data centre should be carefully climate-controlled with air conditioning so that the temperature ranges from 20″25 C (68″75 F) and humidity ranges from 40″55%. Physical security is a crucial component in a good data centre. Make sure physical access is restricted to selected staff and select a data centre that offers video camera surveillance and permanent security guards 24 hours a day.

Dont Forget About Service Though there are many other considerations when inspecting data centre facilities, the most important ones are the redundant power supply, climate control, and security. You must consider, however, that the data centre is only part of a larger package. Dont forget to analyze all the aspects of the hosting solution you are considering. Talk to different vendors and try to get a sense of the value thats added to their overall service. If you can, try to speak with current and/or former clients of the hosting provider to ask questions about their experience with the service.

5 Steps to Speed Up Your Computer

The biggest issue with a slow PC is that not only can you not perform all your most important activities, but you take up time that could have been spent moving on to other important projects. Additionally, a slow computer may lead to crashes if the problem is not identified and fixed as soon as possible.

It can be hard to identify which of many issues is affecting your PC. Most likely, there are too many issues going on to know which one is causing the most problems. One thing that for sure is that your computer’s problems are results of a mix of many contributing factors.

Spyware and viruses are probably the biggest factors contributing to the problems with how your computer operates. There are others too, such as hard drive errors, not enough memory, errors in the registry, fragmentation issues, and insufficient RAM for your workload.

If you are to the point that your computer speed completely drives you crazy, you should be relieved to know that there are many different things that you can do to increase pc performance. The first and easiest way is to upgrade the components of your system. You should increase your RAM to 512 MB or more and make sure that your processor has a speed of at least 1.8GHz.

1. Make sure to run your anti-virus software regularly. If yours is out of date, or if you don’t have one, get new, up to date anti-virus software. There are viruses all over on the internet and there’s always a chance your computer could get infected.

2. Get a good Spyware removal program and get rid of all Spyware on a bi monthly basis.

3. Your hard drive needs to be defragmented regularly. Defragmenting is the process of collecting files from all around your computer and bunching them together to make more space available. It can take some time, but it will always make your PC faster.

4. Remove all the unnecessary programs that come pre-installed on your computer. You don’t need most of them and they just slow you down.

5. If at all possible, avoid running multiple programs simultaneously. This eats up your RAM and will always result in slower processes.

These simple steps, when done properly and regularly, can save you a lot of time and money on computer repairs. So stop your computer from acting up and running slow by making sure that you optimize your computer performance on a regular basis.

The Basics of Wireless Network Installation

The appeals of Wireless network installation are numerous. The first, of course, is a limit to the number of wires running through a home or office. A wireless network also allows for a very simple installation, since your knowledge of wiring and electrical work can be minimal, but still be adequate for installing a wireless network.

Additionally, the wireless configuration allows you to have a great deal of flexibility in how you locate equipment around the home or office.

In order to set up a wireless network that is internet ready, you will need only two primary components.

The first is wireless LAN (or Local Area Network) cards. It’s important that each PC on the network have its own wireless card.

They need to be inserted into an unused PCI slot located inside of a PC. The antenna portion of the card should be at the back of the PC with the antenna extending up.

Installing the LAN card is not a complicated operation, and can be accomplished by a novice in computer installation. Simply open the computer case carefully and find the slot where the LAN card fits. There is likely only one available, but any computer that does not have a built in wireless system will have a LAN slot.

Ground yourself by touching something metal or plastic to dispel static, then screw the card into the slot with the screws provided. Make the electrical connections, replace the PC covers, then start up the computer. You’ll need to intall drivers specifically for that LAN card. Repeat for each computer that will be on the network.

The second component of a basic wireless network is the wireless router. These routers allow you to share a single internet connection between numerous computers. Depending on the router’s specifications, they can accommodate between four and sixteen computers on a single wireless router.

If you have internet from your cable provider, they may have supplied a cable modem, but those are rarely wireless. You’ll need to plug a wireless router into the modem, then route your PCs through it. If you have a DSL or ADSL connection, purchase a DSL modem.

You’ll then configure your network. Log onto your router/modem through your PC. Read the owner’s manual for the router for specific directions. You’ll want to direct it to automatically assign IP addresses to any PC attached to it. It’s recommended that you stick to basic network configurations and use the 192.168.01 as the first IP address and the 0.9 as the ending address, which gives you the potential for eight additional devices to be installed, if you like.

You want your router to be the primary gateway and also the primary DNS, so both of these boxes should be set to the router IP (182.168.0.1). Other boxes should be blank or contain default indicators.

The next step is to go to the Network Connections screen in a PC start menu, right click on wireless network and go through properties to indicate that you want the router to obtain an IP address automatically.

Ubuntu 9.04 – A Giant Leap Forward for Linux

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope ” a unique distribution of Linux ” has finally been released. It offers a huge pile of improvements over the last version, Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

Most noticeable for someone used to Ubuntu 8.10 would be the new notification pop-up effects. These now more closely resemble the appearance of the Growl notification plugin for Mac OS X. This notification system alerts the user to system events in a simple, attractive fashion. For example, it will notify the user when his battery is low, when he has a new message (if using Pidgin for internet messaging), when new email arrives, and the like.

Ubuntu 9.04 also includes a new and beefed up Xorg server. Xorg is what powers the display and GUI. This improvement features better stability and powerful new options on the back end. By default, the familiar control-alt-backspace command to restart the Xorg system has been turned off. The developers made this change because too many people were hitting control-alt-backspace during normal use – causing the user to lose what he was working on.

Version 9.04 also includes a vastly improved version of the GNOME desktop system. This new desktop environment is mainly a bugfix release but also includes a few new features. My personal favorite its enhanced integration with GNOME-Do. GNOME-Do is like QuickSilver for the Mac. It gives the user easy access to all his files and programs and the push of a couple of keys. Jaunty supports the “Docky” function of GNOME-Do which creates a very-capable and powerful dock at the bottom of your screen. On this dock one can place quick launchers for his favorite programs or shortcuts to his files.

A sad omission from Ubuntu Hardy was Open Office 3.0. OO3 was, for some odd reason, not installed in the final release of 8.10. Of course, you could add it easily, but that can be a hassle for users without experience with installing software in Linux. Fortunately, Ubuntu 9.04 includes the newest version with many many new features.

As with previous distributions, Ubuntu 9.04 includes all the basics.

It comes with an office package, Open Office 3, which is just as powerful as Microsoft’s MS Office. You can play all of your music and videos in a breeze with the built in music player ” or install your own easily.

Ubuntu’s default browser is Firefox 3, the famous internet browser from the Mozilla foundation. Ubuntu also includes advanced photo management (tags, sharing, uploading, sorting, etc) with F-Spot Photo Manager. You even get professional support for business activities like email, file sharing, video conferencing, and the like.

Of course, you are also able to install programs at will. You are not limited to what software is installed on your computer.

While no computer system is flawless, you can’t beat the price: $0.00

Are Managed Hosting And Dedicated Hosting The Same?

Both a managed hosting service and dedicated service mean running a server that is not shared with anyone else. Beyond that, the services you get will depend largely on the provider since there is no industry standards set for servers. What this means is that fully managed to one provider may mean the same as self-managed to another provider. It is the term ‘managed’ that causes the confusion.

Many things can be involved in managed hosting including – Application monitoring – System updates – Intrusion detection – Server monitoring – Backups – Database administration

These are only a few of the many items which can fall under the term of managed hosting. Because there are no industry standards, it is best to check the details before you decide on a dedicated hosting site. Managed hosting is always dedicated but dedicated hosting has different management definitions depending on the provider. Dedicated hosting can further be broken down into different types

- Basic: This is normally is chosen if low RAM, Hard Disc and Operating System on the server – High End: Usually involves Quad Core Configuration – Bandwidth Dedicated – Database Dedicated – Server Mirroring Dedicated

You will notice that ‘managed’ is not mentioned in any of the categories. Management is above and beyond what dedicated servers provide. When referring to web hosting; dedicated servers are basically a rented service which includes the server, the internet connection and the software whereas managed hosting refers to the administration of the website. Managed hosting goes above and beyond what dedicated servers provide. Managed hosting is an additional service with varying degrees of options available depending on the provider. While they are often used in the same context, they mean very different things. Again, managed hosting is always on a dedicated server but a dedicated server does not necessarily mean you will get managed hosting. Different providers offer different management hosting on top of the dedicated server they provide. Managed hosting and dedicated servers do not have the same meaning.

Studio XPS 13: Well-dressed Business Laptop

The basic concerns of notebook makers and notebook users are on the necessary role and routine of the laptop. But with Studio XPS 13, performance is joined with a graceful look. At first look, you will notice its classy projection but theres more to it than its covering ” the nVidia Hybrid SLI graphics. Hybrid power enabled switching the graphics card to a low power consuming state and the SLI enables scaling the graphics power to the integrated NVIDIA motherboard GPU. And astonishingly, you can scarcely experience lagging using this business laptop. And it offers up to 8GB of RAM, a very good upgrade if utilized.

This notebook comes in two design options with its 13-inch screen ” the CCFL screen (compatible with 2MP camera) and the WLED screen (compatible with 1.3MP camera) which is a brighter one. Despite its differences, both has a resolution of about 1280×800, good enough to be integrated with facial recognition software which can be configured as a security feature.

You can also enjoy in the Studio XPS 13 is the backlit keyboard, hinge-lights which indicate the battery charge and computer power status, the integrated webcam, and the Vista PCRestore. The keyboard is remodelled to fit the small size and therefore some keys were moved.

Its brilliant genuine leather accents and glossy surface is indeed an attractive combination. The leather part provides the grip while the glossy element provides the elegance. But these stylish cover is negated by the aluminium hinges which looks like a misplaced plastic attachment. It certainly is a distraction.

Also, Studio XPS 13 doesnt have enough ports and connections. It only contains 2 USB ports ” one is a regular USB port while the other is an e-SATA USB port where you can also plug in a regular USB device. These two ports are found on the left side of the notebook alongside the security cable slot, VGA, Ethernet, display-port connector and an HDMI port. On the opposite side, we have the ExpressCard slot, FireWire port, DVD drive, and the power connector port. The back part has no ports and connections showing only a single vent for hot air.

Now this vent has its drawback with respect to its screen. The left side of the display will result to staining since it blocks the vent for hot air. Now, this would further effect to screen deformation, or worse, a wrecked computer screen.

Generally, this portable machine has good performance in terms of its basic functionality. But the cover function design and the connections, are a bit awkward. And with these faults, it made the Studio XPS 13 impractical with the price of $1,524.00.
